Continuing their deep commitment to providing quality affordable housing to the Mt. Eden neighborhood in the Bronx, Settlement Housing Fund and The Briarwood Organization have partnered to develop the new construction of 60 units of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments on Walton Avenue. The triangular shaped lot is the result of historic overlays of zoning which creates unusual property lines and in turn, a building form which references the street line as well as the site configuration.

The Walton Avenue façade is broken into four separate planes differentiated through brick colors that form a gradient along the façade. The revealed edges of the planes allow for corner windows into each apartment living room. The 11-story building is developed as Quality Housing and benefits from natural lighting in corridors and a generous rooftop terrace. The project was developed under the Enterprise Green Communities Guidelines and participated in the NYSERDA Multifamily Performance Program, which emphasizes energy savings and efficiency.

1561 Walton Avenue received an Award for Design & Construction from the Queens and Bronx Building Association in 2014 and a Design Award of Excellence in Affordable and Supportive Housing from the Society of American Registered Architects New York Council in 2018, as well as the Society of American Registered Architects’ National Design Award of Merit in Multi-Family Residential: Affordable Housing in the same year.
