As Executive Architect of this new 12-story, 103-unit affordable housing building, ESKW/A is proud to continue our more than a decade long relationship with the Clinton Housing Development Company (CHDC). This community-based organization preserves and creates affordable housing in New York City’s Clinton, Chelsea, and Hell’s Kitchen neighborhoods and strives to honor their people, history, and physical character.

Our latest collaboration, 540 West 53rd Street, includes commercial storefronts on the ground floor and cellar with apartments ranging from studio to 3-bedroom units above. There are two large landscaped roof terraces and additional amenities such as a fitness room and children’s playroom. The building also has a multipurpose common room with a commercial kitchen to serve both the residents and the community.  Its neighbor to the west is a community garden developed as part of the project.

“[We pay] specific attention to location and integration of its developments into both the block and the neighborhood,” CHDC says. “Great attention is given to livability of apartments and overall building design.” In keeping with this approach, 540 West 53rd Street features detailed brickwork that is inspired by the neighborhood context and is respectful of the area’s historic character. Specific attention was given to the brick arches and constructing these traditional elements with modern technology.

The project is Enterprise Green Communities compliant and was developed in partnership with the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
