This renovation replaces solid walls with glazed storefront to open the busy core of an existing community center. The new design allows all program rooms to be visible from the central lobby, emphasizing a sense of security and allowing a small staff to monitor the entire center. Boldly colored glazed wall tiles delineate the utility spaces between the rooms, further emphasizing the continuity of the open space. A new stainless steel vestibule and concrete canopy gesture to the community and announce the center. Improvements to the space include a library, game room, meeting/classrooms and computer and music rooms enhanced with built-in furniture and new equipment. ADA compliant restrooms and a new kitchen support the center's growing population, while replacement of the heating, cooling, lighting, security, and fire alarm systems ensure that the center can continue to flourish. This project was awarded an AIA New York Chapter Merit Design Award for Interior Architecture in 2005.
