A growing learning center, the Bronx Community Charter School (BxC) is expanding into 30,000 sq. feet within a new building on Webster Avenue. BxC is slated to open its doors in September 2012 and will accommodate grades K-8 at capacity. Grade-specific nooks announce the entrance to each grade cluster and the spacious open staircase encourages the flow of students between the upper and lower sections. Students can explore their green thumbs in an outdoor roof garden and play space. Recessed alcoves adjacent to classroom offer unique spaces that foster student’s creativity. These “front porches” allow students to showcase their current activities and interests and act as a supplemental breakout space to the typical classroom learning environment. Our process of working closely with the school to understand their educational mission has yielded spaces that are dynamic and unexpected.
